Vasco Pimentel

Is a Portuguese pianist born in 1994. With his mother as a music teacher and his father, Paulo Lamas Pimentel, a piano tuner, music was a constant at home, and at an earlier age, Vasco started to attend live concerts. He is the fourth generation of a renowned Portuguese family of musicians.

At age four, Vasco started piano lessons with Lilia Rakova and, at age 10, entered the Instituto Gregoriano de Lisboa, completing the eighth grade in classical piano with Martin Gerhardt. Vasco also studied percussion at the Escola da Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa and drums at Escola de Jazz Luiz Villas-Boas.

At 14 years old, Vasco showed an interest in jazz, studying with pianists Paula Sousa, Dan Hewson, and Ana Araújo.

He completed the piano course from the Escola de Jazz Luiz Villas-Boas with Óscar Graça.

In 2019, Vasco earned the Master's degree in Jazz from the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa with the pianist João Paulo Esteves da Silva, his teacher for five years.

Vasco has participated in several Jazz workshops in Portugal and Spain, learning with musicians such as Aaron Goldberg, Jorge Rossy, Jeff Ballard, Michael Kanan, and Ben Street, and has performed with many jazz and world music ensembles.

Vasco has stepped onto the stages of important festivals such as EDP Cool Jazz, os Dias da Música in CCB (Centro Cultural de Belém), with his latest projects, the Vasco Pimentel Trio and Jugalbandish (piano and tablas duo).

As a sideman he has recorded with Inês Pimenta Son of Daedalus (2018) and with Gonçalo Sousa Nova Construção (2019).

He has been dedicated to teaching piano in person and online since 2013.
